Understanding LV segregation, AS/NZS3000

Segregation between Electrical Services

The principle is straightforward: High Voltage (HV) circuit cables should never share an enclosure with cables of Low voltage (LV) or Extra Low Voltage (ELV) circuits. However, Low Voltage circuit cables and Extra Low Voltage circuit cables can share the same wiring system, provided that one of the following conditions is met.

These conditions include the use of low voltage cables that offer double insulation, the insulation of all cables or each conductor of a multi-core cable for the highest voltage present, or the installation of low voltage cables within a separate compartment of a shared cable trunking system with strong and continuous barriers between compartments. 

Just to clarify, in this context, High Voltage (HV) refers to any voltage greater than 1000VAC or 1500VDC; Low Voltage (LV) covers voltage between 50VAC and 1000VAC or 120VDC to 1500VDC; and extra low voltage (ELV) pertains to anything lower than LV.

Segregation between Electrical and Non Electrical Services

It’s important to keep wiring systems away from services emitting heat, smoke, or harmful fumes that could potentially damage the wiring.

 If the wiring system is positioned beneath services prone to causing condensation, such as water, steam, or gas systems, precautions should be taken to safeguard the wiring from potential harm. 

When situating electrical services near non-electrical ones, measures must be implemented to ensure that routine operations on the non-electrical services won’t harm the electrical components.

Furthermore, cables lacking protective covering should not be placed within enclosures accessible to individuals or in contact with other services like water, gas, hydraulic, or communication systems.

 Low Voltage (LV) systems should not be installed less than 25mm from any above-ground gas or water pipeline.

 Additionally, LV systems should not be placed less than 50mm from telecommunications cables. 

If this spacing requirement cannot be met, a physical barrier must be introduced between the two services.
